The climate scientist Jakob Zscheischler analyses so-called compound weather and climate events. These are, for example, floods that occur simultaneously in different regions. Experts from various disciplines, such as climate, hydrology, agriculture, statistics and machine learning, are working closely together in this new field of research. One specific research question is how concurrent heat and drought will develop in the future. One challenge of the research topic is to obtain data on weather-related damages in order to identify relevant weather drivers of impacts. In the long term, Jakob Zscheischler and his team want to use their research to contribute to a better understanding of high-impact events. This will help improve the prediction of such events to enable societies to better prepare for and adapt to them.
