New publication series provides annual update on #biosphere research Climate change, environmental pollution, land use change and the decline in biodiversity - planet Earth is currently experiencing several crises at the same time. What they have in common is that they are all interlinked via the biosphere., These crises influence natural processes that threaten the basis of human life and our wellbeing. The reports of the #IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) are very important documents for collating and categorising the current state of research. However, they are published at long intervals: The IPBES ‘Global Assessment’ report was published in 2019, for example, and the next edition is planned for 2028. And more than eight years passed between the publication of the IPCC Assessment Report (AR5) in 2014 and the Synthesis Report (AR6) in 2023. “In the years in between, there is a lack of up-to-date, regular scientific assessments that provide information on the state of nature and #biodiversity as a result of climate change and other Earth system crises,” says UFZ #ecosystem modeller Dr Friedrich Bohn. The publication series ‘Current perspectives on #biosphere research’, the first issue of which was published in the scientific journal Biogeosciences by an international research team initiated by him, is now intended to fill these gaps in biosphere research. The authors have defined eight topics for this literature study: they range from the protection of coastal habitats to the connection between forests and droughts and increasing fire risks to risks in the implementation of nature-based carbon dioxide removals. “Experts selected by the team of authors analysed the scientific literature of the past three years,” says Friedrich Bohn. 👉 The aim was not only to describe the scientific background and challenges for the topics, but also to identify solutions. The publication series hopefully supports decision makers by delivering new arguments and concepts and help to adjust pressing decision while we are waiting for next big assessment reports. Global challenges require global cooperation. Accordingly, Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft / Helmholtz Association collaborates with leading research centers from around the world, while its offices in Brussels, Peking and Tel Aviv strengthen international research partnerships.   👉 More than 14,500 international scientists work at our research centres every year - on supercomputers, particle accelerators, light sources and high-tech laboratories. 👉 Helmholtz is involved in large-scale research facilities such as the European European XFEL in Hamburg and the European Spallation Source ERIC Source in Lund. 👉 Hundreds of partnerships exist worldwide within the six research fields. Utopie oder Notwendigkeit? Die Mitautorin von „Rettet die Vielfalt", preisgekrönte Biodiversitätsforscherin und #UFZ Chefin Katrin Böhning-Gaese spricht über ihr neues Buch, ein Manifest für eine biodiverse Gesellschaft (https://lnkd.in/exV3yxYr). Sie hat es gemeinsam mit dem Juristen Jens Kersten (https://lnkd.in/eU4aj-Vq) und dem Technik-Historiker Helmuth Trischler geschrieben. Die Autoren bleiben in ihrem Buch nicht dabei, die Bidiversitäts-Krise zu beschreiben. Vielmehr erörtern sie Wege, wie wir von einer naturzerstörenden, hin zu einer naturbewahrenden Gesellschaft, also einer biodiversen Gesellschaft kommen könnten. Tolle Ausstellung! Mit an Bord: Unser interaktives Exponat – entstanden in Kooperation zwischen Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) und DBFZ Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum gemeinnützige GmbH, künstlerisch umgesetzt von Christian Wiegert. Das Exponat ist eine spielerische Einladung, in die Welt der mikrobiellen Biotechnologie einzutauchen. Der stilisierte Bioreaktor zeigt, dass verschiedene Mikroben aus unterschiedlichem Input – von Biomüll über Industrieabgase bis Licht + CO₂ – nützliche Produkte erzeugen können. Token symbolisieren "Futter", das in den Reaktor gegeben wird – verschiedene Mikroben werden so aktiviert und zeigen, welchen Beitrag sie zur #Kreislaufwirtschaft leisten können. Wissenschaft zum Anfassen – im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes! [Bild 3 zeigt, wie eines der MikrobenFenster betrachtet wird.] Ein großer Dank an das Team von Wissenschaft im Dialog für die gelungene Ausstellung, an die Lots*innen an Bord für ihre Führungen – und an alle Beteiligten! Das Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Forschungsuniversität in der Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft, war im Wettbewerb um die #Exzellenzcluster mit gleich zwei Anträgen erfolgreich – und sichert sich damit gute Chancen auf den Erhalt des Titels #Exzellenzuniversität. Die geförderten Cluster: 🔋 POLiS - Cluster of Excellence 🧬 Exzellenzcluster 3D Matter Made to Order (3DMM2O) Beide Projekte werden für sieben Jahre mit jeweils bis zu 70 Mio. Euro gefördert! 🤝 Realisiert werden die Cluster in enger Zusammenarbeit mit: Universität Ulm Universität Heidelberg Justus-Liebig-Universität Giessen Zentrum für Sonnenenergie- und Wasserstoff-Forschung Baden-Württemberg (ZSW) Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin Insgesamt sind die Helmholtz-Zentren in der kommenden Förderperiode an 32 Clustern beteiligt. Within the research unit Smart Models/Monitoring the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) is looking for a data manager/scientific programmer (f/m/x) to support the UFZ departments CER, RS and CHS in their day-to-day scientific activities related to the handling of large spatio-temporal datasets from #observations, remote sensing and #model simulations.
