" The global community must take action” - Negotiations on the #UN Plastics Convention start on 5 August   Since March 2022, the global community has been negotiating a global plastics treaty within the framework of the United Nations Environment Programme (#UNEP) – but no agreement has been reached so far. From 5 to 14 August, the next round of negotiations in Geneva (Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) 5.2) will make another attempt to reach a legally binding agreement aimed at ending global plastic pollution. #Plastic pollution harms not only the environment and human #health but also the climate. Environmental chemist Prof. Dr Annika Jahnke and ecotoxicologist Dr Dana Kühnel from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) are advocating cooperation between the scientific, regulatory, industrial, and civil society sectors in order to achieve far-reaching improvements in pollution levels as quickly as possible. Natürlicher Klimaschutz braucht Raum – und eine klare Strategie für Schutzgebiete   Gestern hat der WBNK (Wissenschaftlicher Beirat für Natürlichen Klimaschutz) - in dessen Reihen sich mit Biodiversitätsforscher Josef Settele und Umweltjurist Wolfgang Köck zwei #UFZ-Wissenschaftler befinden - seine aktuelle Stellungnahme an Bundesumweltminister Carsten Schneider übergeben. Darin werden konkrete Wege aufgezeigt, wie das Aktionsprogramm Natürlicher Klimaschutz (ANK) wirksam weiterentwickelt werden kann – mit einem klaren Blick auf die Potenziale von Schutzgebieten. Um das internationale 30-Prozent-Ziel für Schutzgebiete an Land und im Meer bis 2030 zu erreichen, braucht es mehr als nur zusätzliche Flächen: Der Beirat empfiehlt den gezielten Ausbau, die bessere Vernetzung und die multifunktionale Ausgestaltung von Schutzflächen. Entscheidend ist, wie gut diese Gebiete ökologisch eingebunden sind – etwa in funktionale Biotopverbünde und klimaresiliente Landschaftsstrukturen. Konkret wird vorgeschlagen: - Die Integration von Klimaschutz und Klimaanpassung in das Schutzgebietsmanagement, - Die Priorisierung von Flächen mit Renaturierungspotenzial, - Die stärkere Verankerung ökologischer Infrastruktur – etwa Ackerrand- und Gewässerrandstreifen – in der Raumplanung, - Die Berücksichtigung klimatischer Wirkachsen in kommunalen Flächennutzungs- und Landschaftsplänen.   🌿 Schutzgebiete sind kein Selbstzweck – sie sind aktive Bausteine einer zukunftsfähigen Klimapolitik. Underestimated sources of #marine pollution A study published in Nature reveals for the first time the extent to which #nanoplastic pollutes the North Atlantic Plastic particles less than one micrometre in size are found across the globe – from the peaks of the Alps to the depths of the oceans. A research team from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ), Utrecht University, and the NIOZ Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research investigated the presence of nanoplastic in the North Atlantic. The findings show that nanosized plastic particles are present at all depths between the temperate and subtropical zone of the ocean. By mass, the amount of nanoplastic is comparable to that of #microplastic.
