🌍 Environmental research must be at the heart of the 10th Framework Programme (#FP10)! 🌱   The Partnership for European Environmental Research (PEER) is calling for three priorities to be integrated into the future FP10: ✅ Accelerating green transitions: Implementing the Green Deal is essential to meeting societal and economic challenges. ✅ Strengthening collaborative environmental research: A key lever for maintaining the EU's competitiveness on a global scale. ✅ Doubling investments in environmental research and simplifying financial rules to amplify FP10's impact.   Economic growth cannot be achieved without considering environmental change and management. #Toxicity testing without live animals? 🐟 USEPA researchers have developed a breakthrough strategy combining high-throughput in vitro assays and computational models to predict chemical hazards to fish—reducing reliance on traditional animal testing. Part of the team Jo Nyffeler, today at the #UFZ . Key highlights: 🔬 Cell Painting assay: Detected bioactive chemicals at lower concentrations than standard tests, identifying 73% protective of fish survival in vivo. 📊 Improved predictions: Adjusting results with computational modeling aligned 59% of in vitro data with real-world fish toxicity levels. 🌍 Ethical & scalable: Supports global efforts like the EU’s push for non-animal methods and accelerates hazard screening for thousands of chemicals. 📢 New Methods to Reduce Animal Testing in Chemical Assessments For the CRACK IT Wings of Change Challenge, two teams are awarded to develop innovative methods to replace bird testing in chemical assessments. Under the leadership of Dr Stephan Schaller (ESQlabs GmbH) and Dr Jo Nyffeler (#UFZ), two teams have received £300,000 in funding in the first of two project phases to develop new methodologies for evaluating the toxicity of chemicals to birds within nine months. This aims to meet the existing demand for alternative concepts to reduce the use of live birds in research. The CRACK IT Challenge is a funding programme by the National Centre for the Replacement, Refinement and Reduction of Animals in Research (NC3Rs) that fosters collaboration between industry and science to reduce or replace animal testing. New spatial mechanism for the coexistence of tree species To ensure the coexistence of tree species, tropical and temperate #forests successfully rely on opposing strategies.
