Increasing atmospheric evaporative demand intensifies the severity of #droughts Global warming increases the demand for moisture in the atmosphere. Scientists involving remote sensing scientist Prof Jian Peng from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) have described in Nature how strongly this affects droughts worldwide. Artificial intelligence can solve complex research questions faster and more comprehensively - if it becomes more powerful. That is why we at Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft / Helmholtz Association are developing Foundation Models: basic AI models that analyse large amounts of data, recognise patterns and link information intelligently. Whether from the seabed, the cell nucleus or materials research - our projects deliver enormous amounts of data. Traditional #AI often reaches its limits here. Foundation models go further: they can also respond to new questions. In the Helmholtz Foundation Model Initiative (HFMI), twelve Helmholtz centres are working on seven pilot projects - from medical cell research to the analysis of materials for photovoltaic systems. Foundation Models open up new avenues for data-driven cutting-edge research. With the HFMI, we are building up targeted expertise to make this technology usable for science and society.
