Increasing atmospheric evaporative demand intensifies the severity of #droughts Global warming increases the demand for moisture in the atmosphere. Scientists involving remote sensing scientist Prof Jian Peng from the Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) have described in Nature how strongly this affects droughts worldwide. Accordingly, the severity of droughts has increased by around 40 per cent. 👉 More information on Nature: https://lnkd.in/en4a3JkZ #climatechange #science #remotesensing #publication

Research does not end with knowledge. It must be understandable, accessible and relevant - for citizens, the media, politicians and companies. This is exactly where Helmholtz comes in: With advice centers, digital information portals, open labs, media work and international policy advice. 👉 How do we bring #knowledge into #society? Working on cross-center research programs and managing large research facilities requires special skills. This is why the Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft / Helmholtz Association established the first #academy for managers in the German #science system in 2007. Since then, managers from science, administration and infrastructure have been learning relevant methods and tools for their management work. 👉 You can find out more about the Helmholtz Academy: https://lnkd.in/eN_ymDJ8 👉 Everything about the Helmholtz Academy and its programs can be found here: https://lnkd.in/ebikQAWV All Hemholtz Centres participate in the Helmholtz Academy: Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research CISPA Helmholtz Center for Information Security DESY Forschungszentrum Jülich GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences GSI Helmholtz Centre for Heavy Ion Research German Aerospace Center (DLR) DKFZ German Cancer Research Center German Center for Neurodegenerative Diseases (DZNE) Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ) Helmholtz Centre for Infection Research Helmholtz Munich Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf (HZDR) Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) Max Delbrück Center #management #science

Our Helmholtz CLIMATE dialog platform ensures that our findings reach policymakers and society. As Germany's largest research organization, we are actively committed to change: 👉 We develop strategies for climate neutrality and provide solutions for adapting to climate change. 👉 Helmholtz CLIMATE brings research into political processes in a targeted manner - through parliamentary events, expert discussions and an expert database that makes reliable knowledge visible and usable. 👉 All 18 Helmholtz Centers are working together - for a well-founded, networked climate policy. Artificial intelligence can solve complex research questions faster and more comprehensively - if it becomes more powerful. That is why we at Helmholtz-Gemeinschaft / Helmholtz Association are developing Foundation Models: basic AI models that analyse large amounts of data, recognise patterns and link information intelligently. Whether from the seabed, the cell nucleus or materials research - our projects deliver enormous amounts of data. Traditional #AI often reaches its limits here. Foundation models go further: they can also respond to new questions. In the Helmholtz Foundation Model Initiative (HFMI), twelve Helmholtz centres are working on seven pilot projects - from medical cell research to the analysis of materials for photovoltaic systems. Foundation Models open up new avenues for data-driven cutting-edge research. With the HFMI, we are building up targeted expertise to make this technology usable for science and society. New publication series provides annual update on #biosphere research Climate change, environmental pollution, land use change and the decline in biodiversity - planet Earth is currently experiencing several crises at the same time. What they have in common is that they are all interlinked via the biosphere., These crises influence natural processes that threaten the basis of human life and our wellbeing. The reports of the #IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) and the IPBES (Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services) are very important documents for collating and categorising the current state of research. However, they are published at long intervals: The IPBES ‘Global Assessment’ report was published in 2019, for example, and the next edition is planned for 2028. And more than eight years passed between the publication of the IPCC Assessment Report (AR5) in 2014 and the Synthesis Report (AR6) in 2023. “In the years in between, there is a lack of up-to-date, regular scientific assessments that provide information on the state of nature and #biodiversity as a result of climate change and other Earth system crises,” says UFZ #ecosystem modeller Dr Friedrich Bohn. The publication series ‘Current perspectives on #biosphere research’, the first issue of which was published in the scientific journal Biogeosciences by an international research team initiated by him, is now intended to fill these gaps in biosphere research. The authors have defined eight topics for this literature study: they range from the protection of coastal habitats to the connection between forests and droughts and increasing fire risks to risks in the implementation of nature-based carbon dioxide removals. “Experts selected by the team of authors analysed the scientific literature of the past three years,” says Friedrich Bohn. 👉 The aim was not only to describe the scientific background and challenges for the topics, but also to identify solutions. The publication series hopefully supports decision makers by delivering new arguments and concepts and help to adjust pressing decision while we are waiting for next big assessment reports.
