Reproductive scientist Violeta Stojanovska researches complex three-dimensional cell models of the placenta that are represented by the trophoblasts. The trophoblasts are responsible for the implantation and nutrient delivery to the embryo. Violeta Stojanovka uses these cell models to analyse the influence of chemicals on pregnancy development: For example, which chemicals are dangerous? Which chemicals influence the trophoblast cell function and endanger the health of the mother and the growing babies? Every year, the industry brings 2,000 new chemicals onto the market. According to Violeta Stojanovska, all new chemicals should be tested for their effects on pregnancies. However, this is not currently the case. Violeta Stojanovska and her team would also like to further perfect the trophoblast cell models by implementing parts of the vascular system.
